Safe for health
Ceramic has been in use for over millions of years and is found healthy l and safe for food. It has been observed that ingredients that form ceramic are considered non-toxic.
Versatile
Porcelain tableware is available in different shapes, sizes and colours. You can arrange them on the table according to occasions and cuisines
Heat friendly
Ceramic dishes are heat friendly. You can cook food on the stove, microwave or oven. Unlike plastic, it can be heated without breaking and melting. This is because the material porcelain (supreme material of all the materials) which is present in the product is responsible for even distribution of heat to the gas chambers. But not all ceramics are heat resistant only some can bear the heat. So before buying, make sure the particular utensil is heat friendly.
Wide range of options and inexpensive
Ceramic tableware comes in a wide range of options and may vary in size and colours. But porcelain is said to have the finest properties than all the materials. You can select the best or classy style that fits your table requirements at an affordable rate. In the past, porcelain dinnerware used to be expensive and only aristocrats and rich people owned it. But now as the techniques evolved and new process came into being, dinnerware is available at affordable prices.
Durability
Dinnerware made of porcelain is best known for its durability. Porcelain is burnt at a very high temperature, and as a result, it is durable and non-porous. Even though they look fragile, they possess supreme solidity. Next time before buying ceramic dinnerware, make sure it contains porcelain.

Different Types of Ceramic Dinnerware
When it comes to choosing the best material for your dinnerware there are several choices. There is the family of ceramics (earthenware, stoneware, porcelain and bone china) but also glass, melamine or in some cases, plastic. Here are some short descriptions of the 3 type of ceramics we will be focusing on – Stoneware, porcelain and bone china.
Earthenware
This type of ceramic is heavy, sturdy and casual. The color is usually brown or red. It’s better to keep it off temperature changes and it’s better to avoid the microwave and oven. This material is very porous which means it could stain or absorb liquid. It is also the cheapest but also the less resistant of all the type of ceramics. Often hand painted and fragile. For these reasons we don’t recommend it for hotel/resort use. While the design and look could work well with certain hospitality aesthetics, the material properties just don’t fit well with a hospitality setting.
Stoneware
Less porous than earthenware, stoneware is also more durable and has a lighter color (but is more opaque than porcelain). It’s fired at a temperature between 2150 and 2330 degrees Fahrenheit. It is pretty durable but not as refined and delicate as porcelain. It’s a good family style option but keep in mind it’s not eternal. We have offered stoneware patterns for decades and while it isn’t as upscale and luxurious as porcelain or bone china, it often offers the most “bang for buck” value for use in in-room kitchens within extended-stay hotels and vacation ownership condos.
Porcelain
It is the non porous option of ceramic. It has an incredible durability resulting from the high firing temperature. Porcelain is also resistant to microwave, oven and freezer. Finally, this type of ceramic is also dishwasher safe. This material is usually white.
Bone China
It is generally made from a mixture of very refined clay and bone ash. It is very white, almost trans lucid. Bone China is also very elegant and refined but is also very resistant. Great for special occasions but also durable enough for daily use.

How to Choose Ceramic Dinnerware?
Lifestyle and use
Consider your lifestyle and how you intend to use your ceramic dinnerware. If you are a family with young children or are looking for dinnerware that can withstand the daily hustle and bustle, then stoneware is the practical companion for you. The delicate and refined nature of porcelain is more suitable for occasional use or special gatherings.
Style and aesthetics
Ceramic dinnerware choices are an extension of your style. Think about what kind of aesthetic you want to achieve at the table. Stoneware gives a cozy, rustic feel, while porcelain gives a sophisticated feel. Don't be afraid to mix and match to create a personalized look that reflects your personality.
Budget-friendly options
Ceramic dinnerware comes in a range of price points. While there are luxurious options, there are also budget-friendly choices that don't compromise on quality. Set a budget beforehand to help narrow down your options and make the selection process less overwhelming.
Sets vs. Individual pieces
Decide whether you prefer purchasing a complete set or individual pieces. Sets are convenient and ensure a cohesive look, while buying individual pieces allows for more flexibility in creating a unique collection tailored to your needs.
Making the final decision
With these considerations in mind, making the final decision becomes a breeze. Head to the store armed with your preferences, and don't be afraid to touch and feel the dinnerware. Pay attention to the weight, thickness, and overall feel of the pieces. Sometimes, the right choice reveals itself through a simple connection.
The Production Process Of Ceramic Dinnerware
Raw material preparation
The first step in the production process of ceramic tableware is to prepare the raw materials. Ceramic tableware is made of clay, feldspar, kaolin, and other minerals. The raw materials are carefully selected and processed to remove impurities and to ensure uniformity in composition.
Mixing
Once the raw materials are prepared, they are mixed thoroughly in a large drum mixer. Water is added to create a slurry that can be easily molded.
Shaping
The mixed slurry is then poured into molds, which give the tableware its final shape. The molds can be made of plaster, metal, or other materials. The slurry is left to dry in the mold for a certain period of time, depending on the size and shape of the item.
Trimming and finishing
After the ceramic tableware has dried, it is removed from the molds and trimmed to remove any excess material. The edges are smoothed and refined using sandpaper or other tools. Any imperfections are fixed at this stage.
Firing
The shaped and finished ceramic tableware is then fired in a kiln to achieve its final hardness and durability. The firing process can take several hours or even days, depending on the size and thickness of the items. The kiln temperature reaches a high degree, and the ceramic tableware must be cooled slowly to avoid cracking or breaking.
Glazing
After firing, the ceramic tableware is glazed to give it a smooth and glossy surface. The glaze adds an extra layer of protection against scratches, stains, and other damage. The glaze can be applied by spraying, dipping, or brushing on the surface.
Refiring
After glazing, the ceramic tableware must be fired again to melt the glaze and create a smooth, even finish. The kiln temperature is carefully controlled to ensure that the glaze is properly melted but the ceramic material is not damaged.
Inspection and quality control
After the refiring, the ceramic tableware is inspected thoroughly for any defects, cracks, or roughness. It is also tested for durability, strength, and resistance to heat and stains. Only items that pass the quality control tests are packaged and shipped to customers.
How to Care for Your Ceramic Dinnerware
Washing your items carefully
If your ceramic and pottery dinnerware or drinkware items are labeled as dishwasher safe, you can place them in your dishwasher, but it’s essential to load them appropriately to avoid rattling and chipping. Additionally, avoid washing your ceramic and pottery dinnerware and drinkware with harsh detergents or acidic cleaners as this can dull the glaze over time. If your items are not dishwasher-safe, they will need to be hand-washed. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or materials like steel wool, as they can scratch the surface and fade the glaze. Instead, use a mild dish detergent, warm water, and a soft sponge/brush to clean your dinnerware and drinkware items gently. Most of the dinnerware items here at Decobate are dishwasher-safe, unless otherwise indicated. If you’re not sure, you can always ask us.
Store your items properly
Storing your ceramic and pottery dinnerware items correctly can significantly extend their life span. Make sure to stack your plates, bowls, and cups neatly and carefully. You can also use vertical plate racks to store your collection conveniently. Some people even add a layer of cushioned material, such as felt or rubber, between each item to avoid chipping or breakage.
Heat your ceramics gradually
When using your ceramic and pottery dinnerware items for hot foods and beverages, it is crucial to heat them gradually. Place your item in a cold oven and preheat the oven to the desired temperature, allowing the ceramic or pottery to heat gradually with the oven. This practice helps prevent cracking and other forms of thermal damage that can occur when ceramic items are exposed to sudden changes in temperature.
Avoid exposing your items to extreme temperatures
Similarly, avoid exposing your ceramic and pottery dinnerware and drinkware items to extreme temperature changes like freezing or heating. Placing cold or frozen ceramic items in a hot oven or microwave, or vice versa, can cause thermal shock and lead to cracks. Ceramic and pottery dinnerware items that are labeled as microwave safe can be used in a microwave oven without any worries of thermal shock. However, it’s vital to note that ceramic and pottery dinnerware microwaved for an extended period can get quite hot, so use caution when removing them. Most of the tableware items here are microwave-safe, unless otherwise indicated. If you’re not sure, you can always ask us.
Check your dinnerware for cracks and chips regularly
Performing regular inspections can help detect cracks and chips early before they cause extensive damage to the items. If you do find a crack or chip, it’s best to stop using the item to avoid further damage.
