Ceramic decals are the most widely used decorative techniques in modern ceramics. The decorative patterns on the decals are transferred to the ceramic body or glaze surface by pasting. The decorative patterns are copied by printing, that is, the patterns are printed directly on the objects. For special-shaped and special-requirement printing materials and substrates, indirect decoration methods are required. Small film decals are a decorative method that meets this requirement.
Small film decal paper, also known as water transfer decal paper, is a decorative process that first prints the pattern on a special paper pre-coated with water-soluble glue, then transfers it to the surface of the object after soaking it in water. Small film decal paper is composed of the bottom layer of base paper (also called paper base), the middle layer of sol, and the surface cover oil.
Film decals can be divided into high-temperature decals and low-temperature decals according to the different baking temperatures after transfer.
Let's take a look at their differences and similarities:

►1. The main component of low-temperature decal paper is ink material. The color material dries slowly during production, and it takes enough time to completely dry before the second process can be carried out; the firing temperature of low-temperature decal paper is 120-180 degrees. Low-temperature decal paper is affordable, colorful, versatile, good gloss, strong three-dimensional sense, anti-corrosion and environmentally friendly, but the adhesion is relatively weak.

►2. High-temperature decals are divided into: overglaze, mid-glaze, and underglaze. Overglaze decals are mainly used for wine bottles and daily-use porcelain, etc., and the firing temperature is about 780 degrees. Mid-glaze and underglaze are mainly used for daily-use porcelain, artistic porcelain, etc. Some high-end wine bottles also use mid-glaze decals, and the firing temperature is 1250 degrees to 1380 degrees. High-temperature decals have good wear resistance and will not fall off or fade even if placed for a long time. They have strong adhesion, but their price is higher than that of low-temperature decals, and they are prone to bursting and other phenomena. The temperature control is difficult, and sometimes different temperatures are selected according to different colors. Especially for decals with gold, if the temperature is too high, it is easy to burn black and change color; if the temperature is too low, the color is not bright enough and dark.
►3. Lifespan of decal paper: The service life of low-temperature decal paper is shorter than that of high-temperature decal paper. The best time to use decals is within one month. If it is used for too long, it is easy to oxidize, so it is basically not kept in stock.

►4. Dehydration problem of decal paper: If it is difficult to dehydrate during decal making, it is usually a problem with the base paper. Do not pull it too hard at this time, otherwise the decal paper pattern will be damaged. It is recommended to soak it in water for a little longer, but the water temperature should not be higher than 25 degrees, and should be between 20-25 degrees.

►5. Decal: During the decal process, try to use soft rubber when scratching the paper, especially when applying low-temperature decals, which can easily scratch the pattern. When decaling, the water needs to be fully dried, and then wipe it again with a dry cloth.
►6. Decal tearing: There are two types: cold tearing and hot tearing (cold tearing is tearing the film before baking, and the other is hot tearing after baking). The best time for cold tearing is 10-24 hours.Try to put it in a cool and ventilated place to make it easy to tear the film.In winter, the weather is cold, so hot tearing is generally used.
►7. Decal adhesion problem: Different ceramic processes will affect the effect of decals. For example, there are several common problems with the rough surface of wine bottles. If the decals fall off after half an hour, it is mainly because the surface is not smooth enough. We usually do special treatment to enlarge the small pattern or the overall bottom film to increase the consolidation of each pattern; If the adhesion is still poor after baking, you can only increase the baking temperature or keep it in the kiln for a longer time.
►8. Storage of decals: Do not press heavily during storage and transportation, and place it upright. It is recommended to store decals in an environment with a humidity of 60-75 degrees.
